Microwave Ablation

Hello Everyone,

Does anyone have any experience regarding multiple sessions of Microwave Ablation for the control of Colon Cancer Liver Metastases? How many sessions over the years? Did the time between reoccurrences become larger? Has anyone become NED?

My Wife has been informed that she will have to have another MWA session (No3), to treat 3 small Metastases that have appeared.

Thanks in advance

  • Hello Frank and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your wife's situation and appreciate you wanting to hear from others who have been through similar.

We have some general information about treatment using heat such as microwave ablation on our 'about cancer' web pages. As you can see this is a treatment that can be repeated again and again if needed to treat small liver metastases that cannot be operated on.

The frequency of treatment needed will depend on the individuals patients cancer and if and when the cancer cells start to grow again. This may be within a few months or within a year or two. Microwave ablation can be an effective treatment but as I say there is a risk of recurrence for a small group of patients. Which is why people can have the procedure again when this occurs.

A response to any treatment can vary and some people can sometimes get a complete response (no evidence of disease) from this type of treatment. Whilst it may be impossible to say for sure, I think it is always worth asking the specialist doctor involved in a patients care what they hope the treatment to achieve for them.

I wish your wife all the best with her upcoming treatment.

Do get back if you have further questions.

    Take care

    Naomi
