Cin 3 smear

Hi I have had my results from my smear test which shows severe CIN 3 changes. Is this likely to be cancer? I feel very worried

  • Hello Msuss and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to learn that you have CIN 3.

I can understand this is causing you to worry. Cervical screening aims to look for HPV and cell changes known as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN).

It is important to know that CIN is not cancer. What it does mean is there are changes to the outside of the cervix and CIN 3 means the full thickness of the lining has abnormal cells. There is a possibility that over time these cells may become cancer if left untreated. Therefore you will be offered treatment to lower your risk of cervical cancer.  You will then be invited to have a follow-up screening test 6 months after treatment for abnormal cells.

I hope this helps. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Take care Msuss, all the best

    Jemma

  • Thank you very much, so there is no chance of this being currently cancerous?
