Infertility risk

Hi, my partner was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma back in 2022 and he’s just had his fertility check and we are waiting on results.

I can’t lie it’s driving me mad. I feel numb and so worried about not being able to have children as it’s always been our dream. I’m not sure how to cope. How likely is it he’ll be infertile? And how do I cope with it?

  • Hi Willlib and thank you for your post.

I understand that this must be a very stressful and emotional time for you and your partner. However, I'm afraid without being involved in your partner's care we cannot say how his fertility may have been affected and whether you will be able to have children in the future.   What I do know is that fertility varies for all men, regardless of their situations.

The ability to conceive after cancer treatment can vary and often depends on the treatment and drugs used. We have further information about cancer treatments and fertility on our website.  You may also like to read Maggie's information on fertility after cancer treatment.

If your partner’s sperm count returns low this time it may still recover over the next few months.  If unfortunately your partner's sperm does not recover there is information about infertility on our website and also Macmillan.

If you are unable to have a child, it's natural to feel sadness, grief and loss. These emotions can be difficult to come to terms with, especially after everything you've been through. Thankfully, there are organizations such as Fertility Network UK  that can help you address these feelings. Furthermore, you can also consider seeking counselling which can assist you in resolving and addressing the range of emotions you're experiencing.

I can appreciate there is a lot of uncertainty for you both and I am sorry I cannot be more helpful on this occasion. I really hope you know more soon and that everything will be okay for you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

    Tina
