Late Radiotherapy effects

Hi there,

I received radiotherapy in December 2021 after a stage 1 breast cancer diagnosis. My breast has never really returned to normal and is always a bit tender but in the last few days my boob has gone quite red, like a sunburn and it feels irritated. I haven't been well with a virus of some sort and my joints were aching. I'm worried about the cancer returning, is this a sign of inflammatory breast cancer? Or is it down to the radiotherapy?not sure what to do

Thank you x

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to hear you have been unwell and are now concerned about your breast.

The skin in that area sounds like it is still quite reactive, and may well have been affected by your recent virus. Try and keep the area cool and covered from strong sunlight. Use PH balanced products, and pat dry. Some patients anecdotally have said that aloe vera/ after sun products can help calm the skin down.

If it persists despite theses measures, or becomes hotter and more sore, then make an appointment to see your GP. You can sometimes get breast tissue infections, that require antibiotics. You can always make a GP appointment anyway, then cancel nearer the time if your breast improves.

    I hope this helps,
