Actinic Keratosis

Hi

I have been diagnosed this week, (small area of right cheek) when the dermatoligist mentioned topical chemotherapy, I panicked, She explained the treatment but agreed to leave it for 4 months, should I start the treatment now? after checking the BAD site it sounds straightforward, but I worry about the effects of the cream.

Kind Regards

PTMY

  • Hello PTMY and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling anxious about starting the treatment on your cheek.

I can understand that it is unsettling reading about the side effects. I can't make the decision about whether you should start the cream but you may find that you don't get many of the side effects listed and it would be good to try and get rid of a very treatable cancer.

If you find that your skin is getting sore from your treatment your GP may be able to prescribe a steroid cream that might help. Have a read on our website about chemotherapy cream for skin cancer

    I hope this helps.

If you would like to talk any of this through with one of the helpline nurses then do give us a ring.

Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the nurses are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Many thanks Catherine, can you please advise a routine. I have been told to apply Efudix at night, I use Cetraben in the mornings, at what point do I use the Hydromol

  • Hello Ptmy and thank you for getting back to us.

It may be better to ask the pharmacist about the application of the creams. It is difficult for us to comment on the timings of the three creams, when we aren't involved in your care.

Take care, and hopefully you will get the information you need soon. If you want to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
