Stage 4 Melanoma skin cancer

My husband who is 73 has been recently diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma. This is a total shock and we are finding it hard to believe and don’t know how to cope. He had 3 months of immunotherapy but unfortunately this did not work, meanwhile the cancer has got worse. ( he has it in his lymph nodes and liver) he has started the drugs Dabrafenib and Trametinib . He is suffering side effects . Do these side effects go after time? ( he’s only had them one and a half weeks- had to stop for a day as got a temperature and was shivery.
One thing I’m so upset about is that they literally said to us the immunotherapy hasnt worked, you can try these tablets but they only work for 9-12 mths. Are they saying that after that time that it?? We are absolutely heartbroken we have been given no hope whatsoever ️

  • Hello Rosiemai and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your husband's situation, this must be a difficult time for you and your family.

Everybody's response to treatment is different, for some people, the side effects may improve as time goes on, or they can be managed well. For some people, the side effects may not improve and the doctors may need to review the situation and weigh up whether the benefits of treatment are outweighed by any side effects. It is difficult as no one can say how a person is going to react to treatment.

Unfortunately, as nurses not involved with your husband's care, we cannot comment on his situation and what his outcome may be. I wondered if your husband has a nurse specialist who you can discuss this with. They may have an answering machine where you leave a message but they will get back to you. It might also be worth trying to contact the consultant's secretary and see if it is possible to speak with them about your husband's situation to clarify things.

I can appreciate there is a lot of uncertainty for you both and I am sorry I cannot be more helpful on this occasion. You may have seen this, we have information about advanced melanoma and Dabrafenib and Trametinib on our website which you may find helpful.

You may also find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best

    Jemma
