What to expect from a kidney biopsy

It is likely that I will have this procedure soon. I have read the information provided by the charity but I am not any the wiser. If a biopsy is performed does that mean that a partial nephrectomy won’t be performed ? Thank you

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

A renal biopsy is usually carried out in a x-ray or radiology department in a hospital as a day case using local anaesthetic. Having a partial nephrectomy is surgery under general anaesthesia, and would require a stay in hospital. So, you would have the biopsy first to obtain more clinical information.

If the biopsy results showed cancer, or abnormal cells, or some kidney diseases, then further surgery may be suggested.

I hope this explains the difference. Do confirm things with your hospital team if you can, so you are more prepared.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,

    Vanda
