John - is constant peeing after bladder treatment normal?

Finished my chemo radiation treatment for bladder cancer now have 2 weeks for bladder to clear  but struggling having to keep going to wee every  2to three minutes 24/7 is this normal and how long before bladder gets back to normal

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you needed to have chemotherapy and radiation treatment for bladder cancer.

Because the radiation treatment can cause bladder inflammation this can cause an increase in passing urine, and it can also cause problems passing urine. However, urinary symptoms can also happen if there is an infection. Therefore, if you have not already told your specialist hospital team about your urinary output do, just in case you have an infection.

You will see in the information on our website about the symptoms of bladder cancer with radiation treatment  that it can take about 2 weeks after stopping treatment for symptoms to get better.

At first, you may see that your symptoms start to improve before they go away altogether. I think if it is taking longer and you are concerned you should let your specialist team know. As I said before it could be an infection or that you will just need to wait a bit longer for the symptoms to improve.

Another charity called Bladder Cancer Action has information and can provide support to people affected by bladder cancer.

You may also find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
