Nails after chemotherapy

My nail on my big toe has just dropped off leaving an unsightly dry nailbed. How should I treat it and how long before it looks normal again. My chemotherapy finished in January.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Nails can take up to six months to fully regrow back. You might want to gently pad it when wearing footwear for now.

If it is sore, then do consult your GP, or a podiatrist, for further advice.

The NHS have information on nail problems

    I hope this helps,

    Vanda

  • I'm having same problem, lost 3 this week! I went to the docs yesterday to make sure no infection and his advice was to soak foot in slightly salted warm water 3 times a day and leave uncovered while in house. I use a make up removal pad to pat dry. He said toenails can take anything from 6months to a year to regrow. Hope this helps although if like me your worried about it pop to see gp to put your mind at rest.
