Recalled mammogram

I had a routine mammogram 3 weeks ago and got a letter today with an appointment to go for further tests tomorrow. I rang the breast nurse and she says I have a lump in my inner left breast. I can’t feel anything at all and I’m so scared. I’ve googled and it’s says inner breast lumps have the worst survival rate.

  • Hi Chrissybell and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about the results of your mammogram but it's important not to overthink until you have all the necessary information.

Most breast lumps are found to be benign (non-cancer) and are often caused by fluid-filled cysts or a build-up of fatty tissue called a fibroadenoma and are harmless.

Please try and refrain from relying on Google for cancer information as it is a complex and individual disease.

The prognosis of any cancer depends on more than where in the body it is found. It depends on the grade and stage and how well the person responds to treatment.

You may have read an article which reported that lumps found in the central region of the breast could result in a less favourable outcome. However, it has been noted that this correlation is not independent of the location of the lump, but rather it is dependent on its size. This means that central lumps are more difficult to detect, and therefore, they may not be identified until they have grown to a larger size. The smaller the lump is when first diagnosed then the better the outcome.

I hope you know more soon and that everything will be okay for you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best, take care,

    Tina

  • I’ve been to the hospital today and had another mammogram and the consultant said he was convinced it was a cyst but he did an ultrasound to check and said it’s not a cyst. He’s now had to do a biopsy so I have to wait a week for the results. He said the lump is so tiny I would never have been able to feel it for years. He says when it is confirmed that it is cancer it will be easily removed and he said he had scanned my lymph nodes and they are fine. So not the outcome I hoped for but fingers crossed it will be easily treated

  • Chrissy

  • Thank you Lara - I was ok when I’d spoken to the consultant yesterday but I’ve had a massive meltdown today. He said the lump was tiny and I wouldn’t have found it on my own but I’m sure he said it was 8mm and when I’ve googled that seems to be quite a big lump which is scaring me again now
