Stoma colour

Hi there

My stoma (3 weeks post op) has been pinky red but seems to be a darker red this morning with slightly purplish skin around it. I’ve had a nasty tummy bug the last 48 hours with vomiting and diarrhoea so not able to eat although I am drinking. Do I need to worry?

thank you!

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation.

I think it is natural for the colour of the stoma to change when it is a new one, I see that you just had surgery 3 weeks ago.  However, if it is more painful and more swollen I would check this out with your stoma nurse or hospital team. I would, in fact, contact them if you have any worries as I am afraid that it is not possible for us to give you absolute reassurance here.

Because of your tummy bug please make sure you are drinking enough fluid, you might benefit from taking an electrolyte replacement drink such as Dioralyte. You could also check this out with your stoma nurse or hospital team.

I hope you feel better soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Hi Caroline, Thank you so much for your response. I’m probably overthinking it all. I felt so bad that getting this bug, I had sabotaged my whole surgery and my stoma as the vomiting and cramps made my tummy muscles so sore. It is calming down now & started eating a bit plus taking dioralyte. I’m waiting for my stoma nurse to call back. I also managed to speak to one of your nurses this morning and you’ve both been very reassuring. Thank you so much
