Possible lymphoma in 15 year old due to go on school trip

My 15 year old son was told on Friday that he has an abnormal lymph node swelling that might be lymphoma. His bloods are clear and no decision has yet been made on a biopsy. He is due to travel by air for 6 days on a school trip. We have had two differing consultant opinions on whether he should travel. Is there any advice on pre-diagnosis travel?

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry to read about your son's health worry.

It's understandable you are worried about him going on a school trip. Most people who are waiting to have biopsies or further tests are usually fine to travel.

As you've had different opinions from consultants, it might be a good idea to discuss this further with your son's GP. I think a lot will depend on where your son is travelling to. If there are any uncertainties or risks involved in travelling his GP may think it's best to err on the side of caution. But as I said before most people are able to travel whilst they are having their health concern investigated.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
