swollen uterus

Hi, my practice nurse identified swollen womb when I went for mirena fitting - peri-menopausal. I've been referred for urgent scan but this will take 8-12 weeks, should I request private referral, this seems a long time to wait?

  • Hello Catcentric and thank you for your post

I am sorry to hear you are waiting for a scan and that there seems to be a long wait.

Unfortunately as I am sure you are aware the NHS is under alot of strain at the moment. Many people are having to wait much longer than ideal to get the tests and treatment they need.

I think it is worth checking if you are definitely on the suspected urgent cancer pathway as this is the quickest way of being seen. Do also ask if you can be put on a cancellation list in case a slot comes up sooner.

Having tests carried out privately can be expensive. However if this is something you can afford it could mean you don't have to wait as long to get answers about what may be going on. The only thing to bear in mind is that if the scan shows something that needs investigating this could add extras costs.

You may choose to ring around some private health care providers near to you to find out more. Finding out about the time frames and costs could help you make a decision about whether to go down this route, or not.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
