Screening for Barrett’s

I’ve had Barrett’s for over 20years and until recently was scanned every 3 years. I’ve now been told I don’t need regular checking as my Barrett’s is less than 3cm. I’m very worried about having a Barrett’s diagnosis and no regular checks, with all the benefits of  early diagnosis. Had this happened to anyone else?

  • Hi Cambridge and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn that you are concerned that you no longer need to have further screening for Barrett's oesophagus.

The screening of Barrett's oesophagus depends on how much of the oesophagus has been affected by Barrett's, and how abnormal the cells are, if the cells have pre-cancerous changes (intestinal metaplasia).

The doctors follow guidelines that have been set by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). These say that people with a short segment of Barrett's (less than 3cm) without intestinal metaplasia, provided that this has been confirmed by two endoscopies (gastroscopies) should not be offered further endoscopic surveillance.

It is good news, that you now no longer need to have any further gastroscopies. However, if you do get any symptoms that are concerning you, it is important to be safe and get things checked by your GP.  They can then refer you for any necessary tests.  It might be worth having a chat with your GP about your concerns.

I hope this helps a little. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best

    Jemma
