  • Hi Kizi 786 and thank you for your post

Cancer Research UK primarily funds research and clinical trials.  As nurses we are unable to provide you with a medical opinion.

I'm sorry, but you'll have to wait until your pre-operative assessment to get answers.

I can only assume that the anaesthetist is trying to avoid what is called a thyroid storm,  as discussed in an article called Perioperative Management of Thyroid Dysfunction.

Whereby elective surgeries can be postponed in patients with high thyroid levels due to the risk of precipitating thyroid storm. This scenario is characterized by symptoms such as tachycardia ( fast pulse ), confusion, fever, and gastrointestinal ( stomach) complaints. If left untreated, it can lead to cardiac arrest in some people.

As most cancers are slow-growing, I am sure that a delay would not affect the outcome, but I do understand how stressful waiting can be.  Anxiety UK  has a good website with tips and advice on how to deal with these situations.

I hope this helps and you know more about your situation soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina
