Lumpectomy vs Mastectomy

When I saw the consultant and given my diagnosis he seemed to think a lumpectomy would be an option but he would know more after he had my MRI results for sizing etc. Since then I have been thinking over the options and wondering if I should explore mastectomy, mainly to remove further risk but also I'm worried about how I will look after a lumpectomy and being only 42 I still want to feel ok to wear swimwear on holiday with my 6 year old without people knowing or being able to tell I've had cancer. Its not that I'm ashamed its more about keeping thing as normal as possible for my son and not draw attention to it amongst strangers etc. so as not to upset him in any way.

Can I choose mastectomy even if lumpectomy is suggested? Could I request a double mastectomy and reconstruction if only in left breast?

I have lots of questions obviously about the type and prognosis but this is one element of it all I'm hoping I can have some control over at least.

  • Hello Loulabell27 and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you have been diagnosed with breast cancer, this must be a difficult time for you with lots to take in.

I'm afraid without being involved directly with your care we can't say what is or isn't possible in terms of surgery for you.

If breast conserving surgery (lumpectomy) is possible then this spares most of the healthy breast tissue and for most won't alter the appearance of the breast to an extent that others would notice.

I think you need to wait and see what the scan shows and go from there. You can only air your concerns about the lumpectomy and ask if a mastectomy is possible. I would say it would be extremely unlikely they would offer a double mastectomy and reconstruction within the NHS for someone with cancer in only one breast.

    Wishing you all the best

  • Hello Loulabell27,

I'm just recovering from a lumpectomy and can understand your worries. However, my surgeon was amazing and can honestly say that the shape of my breast that has been operated on is amazing. Once the scar has healed, I wont notice any difference. I'm small chested so not much tissue to move around but they are amazing at what they do. I'm sure your surgeon will ensure that they retain your shape as much as possible. I hope this helps and good luck x
