Waiting time for suspected cancer

Back in December I was told by my gp practitioner that I needed an urgent referral to gynaecology for suspected cancer. Twice they have sent the referral as urgent. However, the hospital keep downgrading it to a normal appointment which is a 9 month wait. I have previously had a loop excision due to severe cell changes in 2005. My smear test was only hpv checked and as that was negative no cells were checked. Is it correct that I cannot have cancer if there’s no hpv? I have lots of symptoms but the main one they referred me for initially can be other cancers not just cervical. Also I’m on ms treatment which raises my risk of cancer. Is this wait normal and acceptable?

  • Hello Khall, and thank you for posting. I am sorry that you have had concerns about cancer.

All cervical smears are now tested with HPV primary testing as it is not expected for there to be abnormal cells , that would cause a problem if no HPV is present.

If you are not meeting the criteria for a suspected cancer pathway the gynaecology department in the hospital will move you to a normal appointment.  This is so they can triage the patients for levels of urgency. Nine months to see a gynaecologist is currently an expected time frame.

Do speak to your GP if you have further concerns about your symptoms, but remember that other non-urgent gynaecology conditions can cause similar symptoms.

Take care and if you find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

  • thank you for your speedy reply. Is it not possible to get cervical cancer if hpv isn’t present then ?

  • Hello Khall, and thank you for coming back to us.

It is incredibly rare to get cervical cancer without HPV present.

If your GP remains concerned about your symptoms, and feels you need to be seen sooner, they will need to contact the gynaecological department. It may be that there is something on the urgent referral form that needs to be adjusted.

Take care Khall and I hope this gets sorted for you,

    Sarah.
