can you get cancer after a hysterectomy?

I had a total abdominal hysterectomy 23 years ago and after surgery and the usual checks everything has been fine and I believed I did not need to have a smear test going forward.  I am on secondment working in Ireland and as part of a screening programme I had a vault smear and the results have shown that HPV was found and abnormal cell changes were seen.  I need to go for a colposcopy.  I am fine with this and happy to have this checked, however, I am concerned as to whether this could be cancer as it has been so long since I have been checked.  Any help to put my mind at rest would be very helpful.

  • Hello and thank you for posting. I am sorry you are worried about your smear.

I am afraid I am going to be unable to say exactly what may be going on for you as the colposcopy will give a definite result. Still, it is important to remember that abnormal cells are not cancer cells, but cells that have been altered by the presence of HPV.

Once you have the colposcopy you will know more and they will advise what happens next.

Here is some information on screening after hysterectomy from the cervical cancer charity, Jos trust, if useful.

Take care Parky and if you find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline the number is Freephone 0808 800 4040. The lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.
