Barrett's oesophagus

Having already had Hodgkin's disease 30 years ago, I'm now waiting on a diagnosis of oesophagus cancer from Barrett's. I've read that this type of cancer doesn't have a good prognosis. As I have a regular endoscopy, which looks for changes, this means it's caught early. Does this mean my prognosis is better?

  • Hi Bambam71 and thank you for your post.

I understand that you are concerned about knowing more about your prognosis. But I’m afraid I can't tell you very much, as someone's outlook will depend on several features of their disease, and it is such a hard thing to predict.

Doctors who are familiar with your medical history and individual situation are better equipped to answer this question.

Doctors base their assessment of someone's outlook/prognosis on their experience of looking after other patients with the same cancer. However, this assessment can vary depending on the age of the individual, the extent of their cancer, their general health, and their response to cancer treatments.

We do have some information on our website about prognosis.  However, I do not think this gives you the best idea of your prognosis.  This is because it is based on past studies. Statistics are not detailed enough to say what will happen to a person as cancer can behave differently in each person so you cannot predict with any accuracy what will happen.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
