Late stage side effects of Nasopharyngeal Cancer sometimes mimic the original symptoms of the cancer

I've done really well since finishing my chemo-radiotherapy for Stage III NPC. Have had 3-monthly camera scans since and all have been all clear. Latest scan was in early January 2024 and it was fine.

I tend to get discomfort in my jaw (trismus), and in muscles in my neck leading up to my skull. I attend regular physio and would have a history of anxiety and muscular tension. The muscle tension tends to worsen when I'm anxious, especially when I associate that discomfort with the possibility that the cancer has returned. When I have the scan the tension almost magically disappears.

I am due for a scan next week. My question is this and I know only the actual camera scan can give the definitive answer... Having been totally clear in early January is it unlikely that the discomfort I am now feeling is caused by a recurrence of the cancer? No nose bleeds or anything like that, lymph glands seem fine (they were both affected originally). Just muscle tension and tension headaches across my forehead and eyes. The physio thinks its related to the muscle tightness she can feel in my scalene muscles and the other muscles running up my neck towards my ears, and the ongoing mild discomfort from the actual trismus issues. I do exercises and stretches for all these.

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry you are going through all this at the moment but unfortunately, I am unable to say whether this is a recurrence or not.

It will only be once you have had the scan and it is reviewed, that they will be able to say what is happening for you.

Take care and hopefully, you will have news soon. If you want to talk about things with one of the nurses on our helpline the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040. The lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
