Laundry detergent for very sensitive skin (chemo)

My mum has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma. She has had one week of chemo with many more to go. Her skin is already very itchy and sensitive, especially on her neck, chest, armpit area. We are using a non bio laundry detergent but wonder if we should change to something with no chemicals, specifically for sensitive skin. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thank you very much.

  • Hello Emma_1980 and thank you for posting

Your question has been passed to the nurse team to get back to you.

I am sorry to hear about your mum needing to have treatment and the skin problems she is already experiencing.

We have some general information about skin problems with cancer that can arise with treatments and some suggestions of things that may help ease things.

As you say using non-perfumed skin moisturisers, soaps and washing detergents including no biological will help. Most non biological brands will be 'hypoallergenic' that are free from enzymes, colours and other chemicals. These are usually suitable for babies and adults with sensitive skin and skin conditions. Unfortunately we are unable to recommend particular products.

Do also encourage your mum to let her specialist team know about the issues she is having so they can also advise on the best products to use.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi

  • Hi Emma,

Talk to her care team for advice as this may be a known side effect to the particular chemo being used with a known remedy.
Meanwhile, as suggested by Naomi, newborn baby products might help.

    Good luck!
