Rectal cancer

What's the best painkiller to take to alleviate rectal ache

  • Best avoiding ibuprofen if you have rectal cancer Flynn, paracetamol is always best port of call.

Aqful what you're going through, I had similar pain after my radiotherapy treatment. Seems like it won't do much on its own but it def. helps, especially if the ache is caused by constant diarrhoea or radiotherapy.

  • Sounds daft but cold compress helps too, using toilet wipes instead of paper...anything cool

  • Thank you I'll try paracetamol and a cold compress

  • Hi Flynn and thank you for your post

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I can understand the worry you have about managing pain relief.

Unfortunately, I am not part of your medical team so I am unable to advise on pain relief.

A health professional needs to assess you and decide which sort of pain-relieving medicines or approaches will be the best.

The Pain Team or Palliative Care Team are the experts on pain relief. If you have a specialist nurse maybe they can refer you or at least seek advice from them.

It may help to take a look at our information on treating cancer pain.

I hope you can get this sorted out soon.  Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

    Tina

  • Hi Flynn123,

Have you considered cannabis oil? My dad passed away last week, he had bowel cancer. We were treating him with cannabis oil at home and it really helped him with his pain. He came off morphine and all other painkillers. I would encourage you to research and look into it.
