Returning to normal

I’ve just had my 5th Prostap injection and another 3 scheduled. If I don't need any more, how long should I expect the side effects to continue once I’ve stopped treatment? I ask this as I was extremely fit prior, and now I am really struggling both mentally and physically with the weight gain.

Thank you

Andrew.

  • Hello Andrew and thanks for your post

People vary in the side effects they may experience with their hormone treatment. Most people see an improvement in their symptoms in about 4 to 12 weeks after stopping the drug. We always advise people to talk this over with their specialist team who know all about you and can advise you further on this.

Do also mention to your team about how you are feeling about your weight gain. They can offer you support, and they can give specific advice through diet and exercise to control your weight.

Prostate Cancer UK  have a forum where men post their different experiences and you can register on the site to join the forum.  I see there is a thread dedicated to men coming off Prostap which you might find helpful.

I hope this is of use. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
