A positive FIT test means that some microscopic blood has been found in your stools. Whilst cancer can sometimes be the cause for blood other things such as polyps, ulcers, piles and other inflammatory bowel conditions can also cause bleeding.

It is only further tests such as a colonoscopy where they pass a camera through the back passage that can confirm what might be causing this.

Being referred on a suspected cancer pathway is the quickest way a person can be seen and get the tests needed to find out more but most people on this pathway won't go on to be diagnosed with cancer.
