Pre chemo blood test shows elevated liver function

Hi, I had my phone consultation with oncologist yesterday, prior to starting next cycle of chemo on Monday. Although they said Chemo can go ahead, she told me my liver function is elevated and they'll have to keep an eye on it. Not really sure what this means if this continues after next cycle. Would like to know a bit more about this, or hear from someone who has also had this problem.

  • Hello Pippin24 and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear you are currently receiving chemo.

Unfortunately chemotherapy can affect the body's different organs. In particular all drugs will pass through the liver and this over time can cause some liver damage that can affect it's overall function. It is the liver function blood tests that the doctors check to assess the different levels in the blood and how well the liver is working.

For the moment it seems the doctor isn't overly worried so happy to continue with the next chemo for now. However they will probably want to closely monitor the situation to check for further changes. In some cases the doctor may choose to reduce the dose of the chemotherapy or may decide to stop it if they think it is doing more harm than good.

Do ask the team more questions when you see them to find out the more finer details.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

  • Thank you for your reply, this information is very helpful. I really hope they only reduce dosage if necessary, rather than stop it altogether. Today is my second treatment and only have one more on this particular chemo. It then changes to docetaxel, so I'm hoping this will make a difference. Will just have to wait and see.
