Cancer of vulva

I start radiotherapy soon, I am so scared.  I live with my partner and sons very difficult to discuss my fears. I have been told that this can be very painful.

I have followed what said regular salt baths but I am struggling with bleeding since biopsies and I have 3 different consultants looking after my care which is conflicting

Where do i go from here, I have been playing waiting game for months now

  • Hi Marie

I had 25 sessions of radiotherapy for vulva cancer. The radiotherapy itself is painless. My skin did get burnt towards the end of the treatment but the nurses/radiotherapy team keep an eye on you and provide you with treatment if you need it. I had 2 surgeries before radiotherapy so I was and still am quite numb in that area so I probably didn't as feel as uncomfortable as some people do after treatment.

If you have any other questions feel free to message me or ask them on this thread.

    Take care x x

  • Hello Marie and thank you for contacting us.

I am sorry you are going through all of this, it can feel very lonely despite being surrounded by others.

Radiotherapy can be a different experience for everyone, but a general vulval radiotherapy page on our website might be helpful. Do also talk to your specialist nurse if you have one at the hospital, as they can be a support to you too.

Living with vulval cancer can be hard, particularly as it can feel like a very private thing to talk about with others. It is great to see you are getting support from other forum users which you may get more of by moving your post to the 'living with cancer' thread.

The EVE appeal is a UK Gynaecological cancer charity that may also have useful information and Macmillan also provides support.

Take care Marie and you may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
