Prostate diagnosis versus Parkinson’s disease

Hi

as my title says I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s April 2013 and have lived and worked until recently ,now I find after some blood tests and examination my gp has referred me to hospital for camera and what ever tests needed. My gp has given me a prescription for she describes as for your water works and I’m sure she said reduce prostate

my questions is if iam confronted with cancer would I be sidelined for treatment of cancer due to having Parkinson’s .would I be deemed not worth it ,I apologise what sounds a stupid question ,but I’m in a bit of a state and can’t get my head around it

many thanks

  • Hello yaesuft2000 and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear you are being referred to the hospital for more tests.

Thankfully not everyone referred on a suspected cancer pathway will go on to be diagnosed with cancer but it is often the quickest way to get tests done and find out more, just to be on the safe side.

If and when cancer is detected and all the results are in a patient will often be discussed by a team of specialist doctors in what is called a MDT ( Multi Disciplinary Team).

Decisions about treatment for each patient is based on the type and stage of cancer and whether it has spread alongside the general health and fitness levels of a patient ( known as performance status).

Patients with Parkinson's like any other health condition are assessed and discussed in the same way as any other patient else is to decide the best way forward for them in their circumstances.

I hope this is helpful and that everything turns out okay for you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes
