Polyps

I went for a flexible sigmoidoscopy yesterday and they found two polyps. I’ve now been referred for a full colonoscopy. What are the chances of finding more polyps? I’m really worried.

  • Hi upallnight and thank you for your post.

I can understand you are concerned that you may have more polyps. The flexible sigmoidoscopy uses a camera to look at just the lower part of our bowel and the rectum. If polyps are found it is not unusual to have a colonoscopy, which goes around the whole of the large bowel.

I cannot say what the chances are of there being more polyps, but it is a possibility. Polyps are very common and most are benign (non-cancerous) and not serious, but some polyps may become cancerous which is why they need to check for them and remove them.

It can be an anxious time waiting to have tests done and I hope it is not too long before you have an appointment.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best
