Ileostomy weight loss

My husband had LAR surgery with a temporary ileostomy nearly three weeks ago and although he is eating well and following all dietary guidance he is still losing weight.  Is this normal and is there anything he can do to put some weight beck on as he is very worried about this.  Before he looked full faced and healthy and was an incredibly fit and active man, now he is beginning to look gaunt

  • Hello Megen and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your husband's situation.

It is still early days since your husband had the surgery and it may take a little time for him to adapt to the new changes. He may well be having a follow up appointment after his surgery and it is important that he mentions if he is having any further weight loss.

If your husband has a stoma nurse or a specialist nurse at the hospital he could mention this to them before his follow up appointment.

If he is unable to speak to them then do encourage your husband to make an appointment with his GP to get their opinion on his weight loss.

He should aim to eat small meals every couple of hours and try and drink at least 6-8 glasses of water.

Bowel Cancer UK have some information about eating after an ileostomy which you both may find helpful diet and bowel cancer

There is some helpful information on this NHS website about advice for diet with a new ileostomy. Have a look at the dietary guide here

I hope that some of these links may be helpful. It is important that he is able to feed back to his team or his GP if he has concerns following his surgery.

You have posted in 'ask the nurses' but if you post on another thread or start your own you may find that you get more responses from other members who have had similar surgery.

You are both very welcome to ring and speak to one of the helpline nurses. We are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm and our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the best,

    Catherine
