Chest congestion

Can anything be done to help chest congestion and cough in stage 4 lung cancer?

  • Hello Jaccal 67 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your congestion and cough you are experiencing. I can imagine how your day to day activities must be affected.

It is important that the doctors and nurses looking after you are able to assess your symptoms and suggest treatments that may help relieve some of your symptoms.

The following tips may help. If you are coughing up lots of secretions then it may help to increase your fluid intake which may make it easier to loosen any secretions making it easier to cough them up. This may also help the feelings of congestion.

There are different cough mixtures on the market so do speak to your GP or a pharmacist to see what they recommend.

If your cough is dry and irritating then your doctor may be able to recommend medication to reduce or stop the cough.

Avoid situations that make your cough worse such as a smoky atmosphere.

It can also help to make sure that you are sitting near a window so you can get some fresh air or use a fan that may help circulate the air.

The charity Roy Castle have some tips on managing symptoms and Macmillan has also some more information about help with controlling symptoms.

Your GP or nurse may suggest some inhalations that may also help.

It is important that you let your team or GP know about your symptoms. I am not sure whether you are getting any support at home but it may be helpful to ask your GP if there is any help that you can access.

If you would find it helpful to ring and chat through any of this with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to get back to us.

Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the nurses are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
