Change in mole

Hi there,

I feel really silly joining this page but feel confused. I went to gp a few months ago as I had a mole that had grown and turned black. I was refered to dermatology and had my appointment today. They have looked at it and said its very different to my other moles and I have been refered to the hospital.

I should hear back from the hospital in less than a month. What should I expect next?

  • Hello TasminC and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear you have been referred to see a skin specialist (dermatologist).

At your appointment the dermatologist will take a closer look at the mole using a dermatoscope (that magnifies the mole). Depending on their thoughts they may take a biopsy ( tissue sample of the mole) there and then or arrange a date for you to come back and remove the whole mole if necessary.

The doctor you see will explain what needs to happen in your case when they see you. Do remember not everyone referred will have cancer so try and take it one step at a time for now.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Naomi

  • Thank you for replying. I think that's were I was getting confused as it was a dermatologist I've already seen at my surgery. She used a dermatoscope when looking at it. Think you always fear the worst
