Eye removal after cancer

I had a tumour around my eye socket through to my sinus cavity. I completed 35 rads and 3 chemos in 2020. All clear was given with 3 monthly visits to see the oncologist. I’m having various issues with my vision in one eye. Cataracts with cornea abrasion and dry eye, with 4 operations for ingrowing eyelashes. I now have glaucoma with high pressure causing pain to my right eye. On my most recent visit to the eye hospital I was referred to a plastic surgeon to remove my eye. Fast forward to now and I’m now due to have an anesthetic assessment next week in preparation for evisceration of eye. Does anyone have any experience they could share.

  • Hello JohnW and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about the past treatment you have had for an eye tumour and the current problems you are having.

There is information about evisceration (removal of the inside part of the eye) on many NHS hospital websites and here you can look at one titled Evisceration produced by the Birmingham and Midlands eye centre.

You are asking for others who may have been through something similar and hopefully someone will pop on here to chat with you about their experiences.

We also have a list of Eye Cancer resources and organisations on our website that may be useful for additional information and support.

I hope everything goes well at your appointment, don't forget to ask them any questions you may have.

Please get back to us if you need to. Our nurse helpline is 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday if you would prefer to talk over the telephone.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
