Pain relief query

Hi

I am asking a question on behalf of my father. He has prostate cancer which has spread to his bones. He is in a heck of a lot of pain at the moment, the pain is in his left hip and spreads down his whole leg making it feel numb, We thought it was sciatica but after an MRI and tests we now know the cancer is in his hip and he is going to be having radiotherapy next week.

He needs better pain relief, he can hardly walk. He has tried pain relief patches, naproxen, codeine, the usual over the counter medicines - nothing is touching the pain. He recently saw the oncology nurse and she said just keep on with the naproxen - he doesn't think to ask for anything else.

Would anyone have recommendations or know of any other pain relief he could ask the Doctor for, it's awful to see him in so much pain and I can't do anything to help.

thank you

  • Hi Amanda

    Thank you for your enquiry.

I'm sorry to hear about your father's situation. I can understand the worry you have about managing his pain relief.

Unfortunately, I am not part of your father’s medical team so I am unable to advise on pain relief.

A health professional needs to assess him and decide which sort of pain-relieving medicines or approaches will be the best for him.

The Pain Team or Palliative Care Team are the experts on pain relief. Maybe you could ask his nurse specialist to refer him or at least seek advice from them.

It may help to take a look at our information on treating cancer pain

If he is receiving radiotherapy for his hip, it should help alleviate the pain by reducing bone metastasis.

I hope you can get this sorted out soon.  Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best, take care.

  • Hi Tina

Thank you so much for your reply.

The plot thickens as we have now been advised he has a fracture in the hip as-well. He is seeing the ortho team tomorrow and hopefully getting stronger painkillers. I will give him the freephone number you provided aswell.

    thank you so much x
