Stage 4 melanoma spread to liver and lungs with a toxic reaction to immunotherapy.

My mum was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma that has spread to liver , lungs and lymph nodes within 3 months. She has the Braf mutation. She received 1 dose of immunotherapy and over a week ago became severely unwell. It was found that she had a toxic reaction to her immunotherapy and this has caused myasthenia gravis. She is currently in critical care unit being treated for this condition. She has had immunoglobulin and is now on prednisone. They say it will be a while before she will be off the medication to help her and her immune system is being reduced by micophlenalate. Oncology will only give her a new treatment when she has recovered. Mums worry is that this might take a very long time and she fears that this will have an effect on the spread of the cancer. No one is telling us anything and she just wants to know how long she might have left so that she can put things in place.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I can appreciate that this a difficult time for everyone right now.

Unfortunately, we are not going to be able to answer her questions. The specialist looking after your mum is the person best placed to provide a full reply, as they have been providing the clinical care up till now. They are the only people able to place her concerns in the correct context for her situation.

I am sorry that this is disappointing, and hope that she manages to recover, and move forward with this.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
