Melanoma after operation

Hey I'm still really new to all this so I'm sorry if this is a really stupid question. So, I originally was given a stage 2 borderline 3 because I think the size of my melanoma was right on the border of stage 3. I had it removed and I've had a WLE and SLNB from both auxiliaries in armits. My question is I've had a letter come throigh to say that these were clear, however at my last skin check they flagged an area on my leg so does this mean that it's not likely anything? Also my letter said my final stage is now 1B what does this mean after the operation etc?

  • Hello CharliePink123 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn of your situation, and I hope you are recovering well after your recent surgery.

The stage of the cancer looks at how big the melanoma is and how far it has spread. Knowing this information helps the doctors to decide the best treatment for your situation. As you will see from the link above Stage 1B means that the melanoma is between 1 and 2 mm thick and not ulcerated. Ulceration is the breakdown of the skin of the melanoma, if ulcerated this can mean a higher risk of the melanoma spreading.

It is good news that both the SLNBs (sentinel lymph node biopsy) were clear, and the melanoma had not spread. Therefore it is unlikely that further treatment is needed but you will have regular check-ups.

I am unable to say what the flagged-up area on your leg is,  your skin specialist or GP might be able to clarify this for you.

I hope this helps a little. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best
