Breast Lump

Hello nurses.

Recently I was having pain under my left armpit. And was told by my mother in-law who works at a hospital that there was a large lump. I went to the doctors she did confirm there was a lump with swelling. I don't know if she was concerned but she put me on the 2 weeks referral for the breast clinic. I go for scans on the 25th. But the feeling is like a really dull constant ache and its recently causing my left arm to go numb and get pins and needles. So whatever it is its pressing onto some nerves. Does this look good for me? As a cyst? Because honestly I don't even know what to think.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

Most breast lumps are found to be benign (non cancer) and are often caused by fluid filled cysts or a build up of fatty tissue called a fibroadenoma and are harmless. They can sometimes get bigger and cause some of the symptoms you describe.

I think your GP is right to refer you to the breast clinic for further assessment. Breast Cancer Now has information on what to expect when you’ve been referred to the breast clinic.

I hope everything turns out to be okay. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over.   The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,
