Confused with breast scan results

Found a lump the gp put me on the 2w breast referral. Had 2 mammograms and a ultrasound got told nothing worrying some scattered califactions but as they can still feel lump see u back in a month. Next appointment had an other ultrasound and told nothing worry about sent for mri to make sure. Mri results appointment told all looks OK discharge. Then weeks later a letter saying come back to look at a different area slightly higher than where they was looking. Went for an other ultrasound  to look at a diffenent area told all looks clear discharge. Again 2 weeks later I get a phone call off specialist to say we want you back for biopsy for a 10mm mass on mri which has had a  follow up ultrasound . Totally confused as I've been told nothing to worry about all looks benign  so what is warrants the need to go back a biopsy after told 3 times all looks OK. Thanks

  • Hi and thank you for your post

I can appreciate it is confusing for you, being told that after the ultrasounds and MRI scans all is OK but then find out a biopsy is needed.

Unfortunately, I am unable to say without knowing your situation why you need to have a biopsy now after previously being given the all-clear.  A breast biopsy allows the cells of the breast lump to be looked at closely under the microscope which will confirm if the mass is benign (noncancerous).

It might be worth contacting the breast specialist through their secretary to clarify things for you or your GP may be able to help as the hospital may have also written to them with the results of your scans.
