  • Hi and thank you for your post.

I'm sorry you are worried about blood being present in a recent poo sample.

I'm unsure what test you may have had, it may have been the FIT test, which is a measurement of the level of blood in your poo. At a certain amount, it triggers a referral for further investigation to find the cause.  So whatever screening test you’ve had it does not definitely mean you have cancer, but it needs to investigate further just to be on the safe side.

Blood in the poo can be present for all sorts of reasons such as, constipation, diverticular disease, anal fissures, haemorrhoids (piles) or colitis.

I know waiting when you are worried is stressful.  Anxiety UK have a good website which gives advice on how to cope in these situations.

I really hope you know more soon and that everything will be okay for you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
