Pre diagnosis womb cancer

I am a 56 year old who started menopause about 6 years ago. In HRT since 2019. I am under a consultant now for symptoms of vaginal bleeding which started after sex but is also happening now without sex. I am now feeling similar to period pain in my lower abdomen and back.

I have had an ultra sound and have an 8mm thickening.

I have had a delay in getting the biopsy and camera which is due next week.

my question is should I keep taking my estrogen as I understand one reason for the thickening can be too much estrigen.

also, what can I do to stop the bleeding in the meantime? How long am I likely to wait for a diagnosis after the biopsy. I am away in America for 3 weeks in 3 weeks time and would like some answers before this ideally.

also if I am diagnosed with cancer how long before they would start treatment?

Thabk you.

  • Hello ClaireW1968 and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to hear you are having symptoms and are currently undergoing some more tests. This is understandably a worrying time for you and it is understandable to have questions.

As we aren't involved in your direct care it would be best if you speak with your own doctor about whether you should continue with the HRT or not.

It is of course important they take a biopsy of the uterine thickening to find out what it is.  In many cases this won't be the result of cancer but an overgrowth of cells in the womb lining, so try not to over think things until you have the biopsy results.

Waiting time for tests, results and starting treatment when cancer is diagnosed varies between hospitals but the team involved in your care will be wanting to carry these out as quickly as they possibly can.

If a cancer is suspected then usually tests are carried out within a few weeks and the results again a couple of weeks later. Time to treatment will depend on what is required and the urgency of it.

There is more information about endometrial hyperplasia (abnormal growth of cells in the womb lining) produced by the royal college of obstetrician's and gynaecologists, you may find useful to read.

I'm afraid we can't say whether you will get more answers before you go away. I suggest you mention this to the team next week at your appointment in case they can suggest any management for the bleeding in the short term.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
