Eating after radiotherapy and chemotherapy

I’m desperately looking for advice! My mother has tongue cancer, and has had her chemo and radiotherapy, this was finished in November last year. She’s has quite a few visits to the hospital due to poor nutrition and dehydration issues. The severe number one issue is eating… she currently has a peg feeding tube, but is unable to eat anything other than a few mouthfuls of soup here and there. Even rice pudding will make her choke. She’s very depressed as she feels she should be able to eat more solids by now… anyone able to tell me how long it takes to be able to eat solids again?! How many months after treatment should she be able to swallow properly and eat again? I just wish I knew what to do!

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to hear about your mother's situation. I don't think there is a very specific timeframe for recovery after cancer treatments such as these, as every patient will differ a little with this.

I am not sure who has been seeing her at the hospital on her visits there. The best people to advise about this is the speech and language therapy team at the hospital. Your mother may need a re-assessment and guidance on swallowing exercises to help strengthen that area.  Her hospital specialist may need to request this on her behalf, so it may be useful to make contact again with them concerning this ongoing issue.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda

  • Thank you for replying, that’s really useful, I’ll see if I can persuade her to contact them again and get this looked into further!
