Bowel cancer

My Dad is in pieces today .

He is under the consultant who said he has a tumour but suggested to  have appointment every 3 months and they will monitor it .

My Dad is 89 so they have said he cannot have chemo or operate as it is to dangerous at his age .

His next appointment is due in April .

I stayed with them last week .I noticed my dad's stools are black and the toilet water is black .

As a family we are under no illusions about his life expectations .

He has lost weight and his appetite is poor .

He was a very fit man up to 6 months .

Are we now looking at end of life .

The consultant did not say it was terminal last time .

But we feel now it is on the horizon .

Can you advise us .

We have various family members pass away in the last 5 years from cancer .

So we are all concerned .

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am very sorry to hear about your dad's situation and I can appreciate the worry you have.

It looks like your dad would benefit from a referral to a community nursing palliative care team (sometimes these are known as the Macmillan team). They could help your dad and his family make sense of what is now happening. However, they are also experts at controlling symptoms and can provide emotional support. Along with the GP, they can also refer your dad to other services if and when needed.  We have information about support at home that might help to look at. Your dad's GP or hospital team can refer him to community-based services.

Unfortunately, if someone is not well enough or has underlying health problems having investigations and treatments could do more harm than good. However, the hospital team are continuing to see your dad so if you have any questions or concerns do contact the team or discuss them at his next appointment.

Living with the uncertainty of what may happen may be difficult but it will help if you and your dad can get some support.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
