Small Intestinal Cancer

My dad just died and they found out he had small intestinal cancer. They said he had a lot of inflammation at the oesophagus area and I was had an infection and had previously had infections. My question is did the infection cause the cancer or did something else cause it? I’m concerned due to where the cancer was as I have several Gastro conditions and need to know if I need to be vigilant for symptoms.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am very sorry to hear that your dad died and it was found out he had small intestinal cancer. This must be a a difficult time for you and your family.

Infection does not cause cancer, but some types such a helicobacter pylori can increase the risk of getting some types of cancer.

Unfortunately for most cancers it is not possible to say what caused them. Therefore, I am afraid that no one can say why your dad had small intestinal cancer.

If you are concerned about any symptoms you have do get them checked out by your GP. This would be to get peace of mind but to also get treatment that could be needed to make the symptoms better.

I hope you have some support and you may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
