How do I support my husband through chemotherapy?

My husband is on chemotherapy.  Once a week by IV at the hospital and 21 days taking chemo drugs at home.

I note after just the initial cycle, his platelets had dropped considerably.  He is currently on the second cycle.

He is struggling with overwhelming fatigue and weakness.  He is able to graze here and there but unable to eat normally due to an esophagectomy last April.

How can I help him ? How can he help himself to "up" his platelets ?

Please help if you can.

Thank you.

Jane

  • Hello Jane and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your husband and can appreciate this is a stressful time for you both.

There are many possible causes of fatigue, but the main causes are often due to cancer and its treatments. We have some information on our website about fatigue and tips on how to manage it such as doing a form of gentle exercise, getting enough rest and eating a healthy diet.

Our information on supplements and high energy drinks may also be helpful. If you are worried about your husband's diet his doctors can refer him to a dietician if needed who can offer specific dietary advice.

People often ask what more can they do to support a loved one going through cancer . But talking and listening and being there when you can are what most people find useful.

There's nothing that your husband can specifically take to help increase his platelet count. They tend to regenerate on their own over time. Some people may need to have a platelet transfusion if their platelet count is very low but this is not always necessary.

I hope this is of some use to you both. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
