Urgent 2 week gynaecology referral

Hi there,

My name is Jodie, I’m a 23 year old female who has had urinary difficulty for the last 2.5 years. I had 6 weeks of persistent vaginal bleeding in June 2023. I waited 8 months for an ultrasound scan to be told I have a 10cm cyst inbetween my ovaries and small cysts inside my ovaries. I have had pelvic pain during and after intercourse for well over 1.5 years. I went to 3 GP Out Of Hours appointment to be told it’s not a UTI or pregnancy- so it must be my period or stress- I have blood in my urine even when I didn’t have vaginal bleeding.

I had my CA125 blood test done at the hospital 2.5 weeks ago as it is impossible to take bloods out of my arm. The GP still hasn’t received the test results! My GP has made an urgent 2 week referral to a hospital trust that has a “higher than average” wait on their website. I still haven’t heard anything.

I am extremely anxious and just want the investigations to start!
My GP stated that one of my blood tests are low and could indicate PCOS. She stated “You could have PCOS but not the actual syndrome” what does this mean! The lady who had done my ultra scan was very flippant when she informed me of my abnormally large and suspicious cyst and it is pressing on my bladder which explains the issues that I have been having. The GP looked at my scan and said “it’s not pressing on the bladder.” So why am I having bladder issues for nearly 2.5 years!

I am extremely stressed and I am getting no answers! I start a new job in the NHS next month and I don’t know what to tell them yet regarding my health!

what do I do with this referral as I haven’t heard anything at all!!!

  • Hello Jodie and thanks for your post

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms you have and appreciate you being worried about what is going on.

Symptoms as you are aware can have many different causes and sometimes it can take time and a variety of tests to find out what the matter may be.

Not all symptoms are the result of a cancer and even when a suspected cancer referral is made in most cases cancer won't be found. If you still haven't heard anything from the hospital do chase this with both the GP surgery and the department you have been referred, if you know this to ask.

Unfortunately as you are probably aware the NHS is stretched at the moment and some people are having to wait longer than recommended at the moment and I do appreciate how difficult and unsettling this must be for you.

I hope you get some more answers very soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
