Nausea and sickness due to bile duct cancer

My mam has bile duct cancer. She is 84 and for the last 3 weeks has had bouts of violent sickness. Dr has prescribed tablets with no effect. She was taken to hospital where she was given anti nausea medication intravenously. This has helped but nausea has returned over night. She has taken the oral version of meds but they’re not really helping. When not feeling sick she is mobile and independent. This is really causing distress.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am very sorry to hear about your mam's situation.

If you have not already done so go back to the doctor that prescribed your mam's latest anti-sickness medication and tell them they are not doing a good job. It's possible that changes to the amount or frequency of the medication might be needed, although I am not sure if it can be done.

It can sometimes take some juggling with different types of anti-sickness medication before you find the ones that works. We have information about the the different types of anti-sickness on our website.

Your mam may also benefit from a referral to the community palliative care team (sometimes known as the Macmillan team).  This is because they are experts in controlling symptoms and can help support your mam and you. Your mam's GP or hospital team can refer her to this service.

You may also find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Thank you Dr has now prescribed Metoclopranide and Dexamethasone. Hopefully they’ll work. Apparently MacMillan should have been involved Dr not sure what’s happened but is chasing this for us.
