Arthralgia caused by letrozole

Hi

I’ve been taking letrozole for 1 month after breast cancer surgery . It is causing morning stiffness , hip pain and hand, feet & arm pain . I’m swimming walking & cycling , and partaking in weekly yoga .
I’ve researched glucosamine , chondroitin and turmeric to see if they would benefit . Is there anything else you can suggest ? I feel miserable to think that this is my life for the next 5 years .
thanks in advance !

  • Hi Sam and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to learn that you needed to have treatment for breast cancer and the side effects you are experiencing.

It is good that you are doing lots of exercise and this is what is recommended. I wasn't sure how long you have been taking the letrozole for, as you may find after a while things start to settle as your body gets used to having the hormone treatment but this may take a few months. I wondered also if you have tried taking regular mild pain relief such as paracetamol or anti-inflammatory pain relief like ibuprofen.

We have information about reducing the risk of bone loss on our website, and you will see that it may be helpful to take supplements like calcium and vitamin D. There is also information with further advice on the Macmillan Cancer Support website.

It might be worth having a chat with your breast care nurse (CNS) as they may also have some helpful tips. For some people, if the pain is not manageable they might discuss changing the hormone treatment with their doctor.

I hope this helps a little. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care Sam,

    Best wishes

    Jemma
