Urgent chemo dosage

Hello

my mum got diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer and had a lumpectomy to remove it.

I am quite confused how chemo doses work? Will too high a dose have an adverse impact- my mum is 70 years old

she has been advised chemo every two weeks and with following dosage:

Adryiamycin 90mg ; Cyclophosphamide 900 mg and Paclitaxel 300 mg.

I am quite worried that these might be too high a dosage? Any advice greatly appreciated

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear that your mum has been diagnosed with breast cancer and I can appreciate your concern about the treatment she is going to have.

Chemotherapy is prescribed to each person on an individual basis. So, the total amount she will receive will depend on her body weight multiplied by her height. It may have to be reduced if someone has an underlying health problem. However, a doctor will only prescribe it if the patient is is well and strong enough to have it.

Also, before each cycle of treatment is given a blood test is done and the patient is assessed to make sure they are well enough to carry on with it.  Your mum will also have a opportunity to say how the treatment is affecting her and if she has had any side effects.  So, once that has all be looked at will the go head for the next cycle be done.

You can find more information about each of the different types of chemotherapy you mention on our website.

If you and your mum has concern's about this treatments you could speak with her breast care team or the chemotherapy team. You may also find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
