Axillary clearance vs radiotherapy

I had a lt mastectomy 4 weeks ago and 3 sentinel nodes removed.

followed up 2 weeks after by  oncology surgeon: was advised that one of the nodes was positive for cancer.

had CT scan which indicated there was evidence it has spread to the other nodes, had ultrasound, biopsy awaiting results, bone scan also waiting report.

in the meantime, referred back to surgeon ( waiting appointment), ? For axillary clearance.
my question is if the outstanding results are negative, can I have radiotherapy instead of another operation?

thank you

  • Hello Sarawak and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your recent surgery and appreciate you having some questions moving forward.

Radiotherapy to the armpit (axilla) maybe an option for some patients. So do ask your own specialist team if this is a possible option for you the next time you see them. This will usually depend on the number and whereabouts of the affected lymph nodes.

We have more information about this in the having radiotherapy for breast cancer section of our website.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Naomi
