Dense breasts

I had microcalcifications nearly two years ago which turned out to be benign after a stereoscopic biopsy. They said I had dense breasts and mammogram can’t always pick up cancers in them, ultrasounds might be better.  I plan to go for my next screening mammogram (probably about a year away) but I’m wonder if it might be an idea to get an ultrasound appointment now. I could go for a private ultrasound.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

Unfortunately, we cannot advise you whether or not you should be having an ultrasound now.  It might be worth discussing this with your GP especially if you are having any symptoms that are causing you some concern.

If you did want to have an ultrasound your GP can refer you to have this done privately or you can self-refer. You might it helpful to look at goprivate.com website that provides information about where to get the investigation done privately.

I hope this helps a little. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Best wishes

    Jemma
