Is it cancer?

Hi, l had a 2ww appointment for breast  cancer last week as l have a large lump (about 5cm long and growing). I had an examination, mammogram, scan and biopsy. I was told by the doctor it wasn’t in my breast tissue  and was not a cyst, but was a lymph note. She said the biopsy’s (2) would be sent to a different NHS trust pathology lab and will take 3 weeks to get a result, after which l would need a full body MRI and to see a blood Dr. I was in shock as I was hoping it to be a cyst. I have spent the last week dwelling on this as the doctor was very dour and reserved. I was too stunned to ask anything.  This lump was found just after Christmas and has grown quickly over the past few months. I am 57 year old female. I have no pain and no weight loss. If it’s not cancer what could it be? Xx

  • Hi and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn about your situation.

Lymph nodes play an important part in the body's defense against infection. Swelling might occur even if the infection is trivial or not apparent. Lymph node swelling can be caused by an abscess development or a localised or systemic infection, such as a cold or other mild infection. You may like to read about swollen glands at the NHS website.

Unfortunately,  you will need to wait for the results of the biopsy. I really hope you know more soon and that everything will be okay for you.  I appreciate the waiting can be  difficult.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina
